If you work remotely, you know how much our environment impacts how we feel. Turning your desk, your corner, into a space with the perfect WFH aesthetic is a simple step that brings more positivity into your workday.
You need the things you probably already have at home – candles, lamps, plants (real or fake, your choice), maybe a rug, a nice pillow for your back. And a bit of time. Not much, right?
Clean out your desk, fold the clothes off the chair and into your wardrobe, and let the fun part begin!
Clean your workstation
This is the boring part, I know. It’s the reason why I sometimes put off any plans I have for a new home office look. But unfortunately, it is important. We need to get rid of old energy and bring in positive vibes.
If you’re struggling to get started, get your headphones, find your favorite artist or band, the one where you know all the songs. Put them on, and start singing. This one usually does the trick for me. Even thinking of my fav bands from high school and playing that after many years. Instant joy.
When the motivation is there, use it and don’t overthink, do one thing at a time, and don’t skip anything. Everything once had its place, so put it back where it belongs, or you will create more chaos.
Pause to breathe
Yes, we just started, but cleaning the mess off your desk and work area is like 50% of the job done. So pause. Be proud of yourself and the time you dedicated to doing this.
Take your time if needed
This doesn’t have to be a one day process. Life gets busy, and that is normal. So please don’t feel guilty if it took a week for you to be able to prioritize this. Remember, you are creating your WFH aesthetic corner, and it doesn’t matter how long it takes to get there, as long as you keep doing this for yourself.
Make a list of the things you already have
You probably have a box of gifts you never used. Or never found a good place for them. Maybe you have old desk accessories from when you used to work at an office that you just put away when you started working from home.
I want you to take a look at them and write it all down. On a piece of paper, a cute checklist, or your phone, it doesn’t matter.
Walk around your home and see what you can use from other rooms. Maybe some of it would fit better in your work room?
Do you really need that new candle?
Whether you’re going for a modern office aesthetic or something cozier, first look at the list you made before, and answer this for all the items:
- Does it work with the vibes I want to create?
- Does it bring negative energy? (maybe you don’t want a reminder of your old toxic office/job)
- Is it useful? (not everything needs to be, of course)
- Do I like it?
This should bring clarity and help you decide if you really need to buy new things.
Pinterest boards for WFH aesthetic inspiration
You might say this should go first. But no. Because Pinterest is our home for all things pretty. At least for me it has been for a long time.
If you’re saving your pins without a specific goal in mind, you will save everything that looks pretty. And if you look at that before seeing what you already have, you’ll probably be on Amazon or out the door to get to a shopping mall as soon as you can.
But now that you have your list, you have an idea of how your office can look. And then you create a new board, search for similar things to see how to create the best WFH aesthetic setup with what you have.
Bring your vision board to life
Use Pinterest to create your aesthetic home office vision board. And if you like what you see, now comes the best and easiest part.
Get everything out, and start assembling. Once you’re done, make sure you didn’t get carried away in the aesthetics. Do you still have pans you can easily grab? A notebook, cup holder, keyboard?
Can you sit on your chair, or is it overflowing with cute pillows? You get the idea.
It will never be perfect (and that’s ok!)
I usually clean my work desk on Fridays, after work. That way I can put it all aside for the weekend, and it’s all nice and clean when Monday comes around.
Except that’s not always the case. Sometimes I work late on Friday and can’t wait to close the laptop and go out. And then there’s a birthday party on Saturday, and on Sunday I want to rest. So the mess is there on Monday.
And that’s fine. We create this space for us, to feel nice and pretty when we sit down to work. We do it to feel more productive.
If you think about it like that, instead of like another chore you have on your list, you’ll want to do it, even when you’re not motivated. And that’s the beauty of a wfh aesthetic setup – it evolves with you.
FAQ
You don’t need to buy much. Start with what you already have at home, like candles, lamps, plants, a rug, or a cozy pillow. A clean, decluttered desk usually does more for your WFH aesthetic than any new purchase.
Before buying anything new, go through what you already own and ask yourself if it fits the vibe you want, brings any negative energy, and if you genuinely like it.
Yes. Once you know what you already have, create a Pinterest board and search for similar pieces to shape your vision. It’s a great way to see how your space can come together before you add anything new.
